Barcelona captain attempted to buy one of the club ‘levers’ in the summer

Barcelona captain Gerard Pique tried to acquire the 24.5% share of Barça Studios this past summer when the club had put it up for sale to boost funds.

This claim comes from journalist Joan Fontes, who states that the veteran defender asked president Joan Laporta if he could purchase the share that had been made available as part of the club’s plan to activate economic levers.

However, the Barcelona president told the 35-year-old centre-half that it was not a good idea as it would be against the ethical code. This, however, did not go down well with Pique who was reportedly left dissatisfied by the conversations.

Previous reports have even indicated that this might have been a reason behind the veteran superstar’s negotiations to reduce his salary broke down.

It is no secret that Barcelona entered the summer market in a precarious financial situation and had to rely on the so-called ‘economic levers’ to bail them out.

The first two levers saw them sell 25% of their TV rights, before they parted with a 24.5% stake in Barça Studios, selling them to Socios.com.

The Blaugrana sanctioned the sale of another 24.5% stake in Barça Studios to a company named Orpheus Media, managed by Jaume Roures in August after Laporta denied Pique the chance to purchase it himself.
